Shortlisted for International School of the Year Award!

Oakwood Primary Academy has been shortlisted for the TES International School of The Year Award!

The awards night will take place on Friday 24th June in London, where Oakwood and eight other schools shortlisted will find out who has won the title of International School of the Year.

The TES School Awards, now in its eighth year celebrates the extraordinary commitment, quality and innovation shown by teachers and support staff across the UK.  The night will recognise the teams within schools who are raising the standards of education and making a positive impact on the personal and academic success of students and the wider community.

Head of School, Jo Speak said: “The whole school are delighted to have been shortlisted for the International School of the Year Award and are thrilled that we are able to celebrate our international contribution at the TES Awards.

"We have weaved international relationships into the tapestry of the academy, which has helped to establish our own international community where all pupils feel safe, valued and respected. Our students are fortunate to be able to develop a wide cultural awareness on a daily basis.”

The Global Committee at Oakwood – a sub group of the School Council, is made up of students from across Key stage 2. Democratically elected, their role is to provide a voice for international planning, represent their classes and evaluate what has taken place. As our partnership with the Mexican school develops there is an increasing emphasis on active citizenship.

Oakwood is partnered with a school in Mexico, Colegio Americano de Tabasco (CAT) in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. This partnership has had and continues to have whole school involvement and through Connecting Classrooms funding Oakwood welcomed 6 Mexican teachers to the school in November ’15.  The visiting teachers were able to begin their trip with a World Coffee Morning supported by the Parent’s Forum.

Director of the Trust, Frank Norris, said “This is an incredible achievement for Oakwood. All the staff are so passionate about the work that they do and it is a part of the DNA of the academy and it all fits wonderfully with the co-operative values of equality, social responsibility and solidarity. We are all, as a Trust, very proud."

The awards night will highlight winners in 17 categories, we hope we can go all the way – in the mean time we continue to act as global citizens and promote an inclusive environment for all.
